Murals at Porto Alegre Airport portray the richness of Brazilian Culture 

Fraport, a German company that won the bid to manage one of the main ports of entry in Rio Grande do Sul, Porto Alegre, delivers the works ahead of the Porto Alegre airport deadline.

The Fraport Group operates Frankfurt Airport, one of the busiest in Germany, and nine more terminals in Europe, Asia and South America, where it is responsible for Lima Airport, in Peru.

The renovation of Terminal 1 consists of a new departure area and a new international departure lounge. In addition to the reformulation, new inspection channels and X-ray equipment are being installed in the area.

Among the news that Fraport is preparing for the new Salgado Filho International Airport, are the largest collection of pop art in Brazil permanently displayed at a Brazilian airport. There are seven panels commissioned by the German company to the Brazilian Pop Artist Lobo, who is a reference in pop art.

In the new art murals installed at Porto Alegre Airport they will act with an intervention. In addition to distracting, entertaining and informing about the local culture.

The art murals were all hand painted by the artist Lobo, with several layers of paint, depicting Rio Grande do Sul. They are spread over several areas of Porto Alegre Airport.

Containing several symbols that are together and mixed of the Capital and the State. The murals are interactive, architecture, habits, fauna, typical dances, gastronomy, sport are some of the symbols that are spread across the murals.

More and more people will use airplanes as a means of transport so that Airports will be a great center of concentrations of people. And in the post-9/11 era, airport terminals became major fortresses, with travelers being checked, machines searching luggage, checking and ostentatious security tests.

And increasingly, the architecture of airports is being thought to reassure passengers about these subconscious fears.

The cool thing about this is to make passengers and visitors go through the airport looking for art, it will be interesting to see people having fun while waiting for their flights. ” says the Pop Artist Lobo

The Lobo’s artworks at the Salgado Filho Airport in Porto Alegre depict the culture of Rio Grande do Sul. To be inspired by the creation of the murals, the artist Lobo did extensive research on the habits, culture and elements of the gaucho traditions.

  • Varig – Viação Aerea Riograndense, founded in 1927 by the German Otto Ernst Meyer, was one of the first Brazilian airline companies.
  • Araucaria known as the predominant Brazilian pine in the southern region of Brazil.
  • Salgado Filho Aircraft Terminal – is the place where planes arrive and depart at Salgado Filho Airport.
  • Map of Rio Grande do Sul, one of the 27 Brazilian states, is the most southern and the coldest. It makes limits with the State of Santa Catarina and with Uruguay and Argentina. Its capital is Porto Alegre.
  • The Laçador, is a tourist attraction in the city of Porto Alegre, means the representation of the Gaucho Pilchado. The monument is 4.45m high.
  • “Gaucho” playing the accordion, this instrument was instituted as the Symbol Instrument of Rio Grande do Sul, it was brought to Brazil by German immigrants.

  • Quero Quero – Bird originally from Chile, likes to live in wetlands and pastures was immortalized in the Brazilian song by Barbosa Lessa.
  • Araucaria known as the predominant Brazilian pine in the southern region of Brazil.
  • Chimarrao: characteristic drink of the culture of southern South America.
  • Missions Region: tourist region in the northwest of Rio Grande do Sul that has buildings that were built between the 17th and 18th centuries.
  • Lago Negro: located in the city of Gramado, it is an artificial lake and has this name because of the trees that surround it that were brought from the Black Forest in Germany, its biggest attraction are the pedal boats.
  • Tropeiros: Between the 17th and 18th centuries, dressed in hats, poncho and boots, these men on their horses drove herds of cattle from Rio Grande do Sul to the markets of Sao Paulo.

  • Mate – Tree originally from South America, it is consumed as mate tea, chimarrao and terere. It is considered the symbol tree of Rio Grande do Sul.
  • Maria Fumaça: Tour from Bento Gonçalves to Carlos Barbosa. The Locomotive in old style offers tours with gaucho music and wine tasting.
  • Chimarrita – Dance originally from the island of Madeira, brought to Brazil by Portuguese immigrants. It is danced to a lively rhythm with rhythmic movements tap dancing and clapping.
  • Gaucho and the horse, from the roots of traditionalism, from the love of man with the animal immortalized in the song of the group Os Monarcas.
  • Arc de Triunfo located inside the Farroupilha Park in Porto Alegre. It is a tribute to the Brazilian Expeditionary Force, the arches represent the soldiers and the statue of the Goddess Athena, represents Bravery.
  • Piratini Palace is considered cultural heritage of Rio Grande do Sul. The works began in 1896 and began to be occupied in 1921. It is the current seat of the Executive Branch.

  • Monumento das Cuias, the author Saint Clair Cemin pays homage to the gaucho culture with porongos, which are fruits of the Porongueiro, matured and without seeds are they that are used as gourd for Chimarrao.
  • Monument to Bento Gonçalves, is a statue that depicts one of the leaders of the Farroupilha Revolution, is located in the city of Porto Alegre.

  • Fogo de Chao barbecue was created in the Pampas Gauchos. The meat roasted on the spit was taken to the rest of the country by the tropeiros, and was adapted for domestic grills.
  • Arena do Gremio is a stadium located in Porto Alegre with capacity for 60 thousand people. It is considered the 7th largest stadium in Brazil.
  • Ruins Sao Miguel das Missoes located in the archaeological site of Sao Miguel Arcanjo, it is a remnant set of the old Jesuit reduction that is part of the so-called Sete Cidades das Missoes, is located in the city of Sao Miguel das Missoes.
  • Fernando Ferrari Administrative Center, houses several state government departments, its name is in honor of the economist and politician Fernando Ferrari. Its construction began in 1976 and the inauguration took place on March 10, 1987.
  • Metropolitan Cathedral of Porto Alegre is by the Italian architect Joao Battista Giovenale. The works started in 1921, and all the granite used for the construction of the floor was extracted from the quarries of the hills that surround the city of Porto Alegre.

  • Catedral de Pedra located in the city of Canela, is an imposing and grandiose building in Gothic style. It was elected in 2010 as one of the Seven Wonders of Brazil by the news portal. It has an external lighting system, the night is lit with a colorful light show.
  • Movable Bridge Lago Guaiba, it has a movable span that elevates a stretch of the track to a height of 24 meters.
  • Chimarrao also known as bitter mate, the drink is a legacy of the indigenous culture that remains present in the daily lives of the gauchos.
  • Margs Art Museum of Rio Grande do Sul, located in Porto Alegre is the main art museum of the State. In its collection it gathers more than 5000 works of art. It was founded on July 27, 1954.
